 For perhaps the past fifty years or more, it was thought that our origin was from two German brothers (namely John Kinzie and David Kinzie) who were born in 1696 and 1694, respectively, and who came to America as young men. It was believed that Henry Kinzie was the son of John, and these were the two early ancestors of our Caleb Kinzie.

Documents which have been found fairly recently, indicate and actually verify a different sequence of generations. In the book entitled “List of Swiss Emigrants” by Faust and Brumbaugh, page 8, there is this quote:

“ A passport is also issued to Christian Kuntzli, who wishes to emigrate to America with his wife and six children. The family is granted 10 thalers as a viaticum. On the following day, Kuntzli is also excused from paying the emigration tax on his property of 60 crowns.”
